AbstractEffective and efficient leadership helps schools to achieve established targets and ensures that they are operating according to federal and state guidelines. This quantitative comparative analysis study sought to address a gap in literature in terms of examining the impact of leadership styles of principals on teacher satisfaction and teacher turnover in urban schools. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the impact of principals' leadership styles, such as transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire, on teacher satisfaction and teacher turnover-percentages in a metropolitan Atlanta school district. Two research questions were presented within the study. The first question aimed to determine the relationship between the levels of transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles of principals and levels of teachers' satisfaction within a metropolitan Atlanta school district. The second question aimed to determine the relationship between the levels of transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles of principals and the rates of retention among teachers within a metropolitan Atlanta school district. A quantitative comparative analysis research design was used in this study with 110 participants. The MLQ-Rater Form was also used to identify the leadership styles of principals as perceived by the teacher participants. Moreover, a teacher satisfaction questionnaire was developed to determine the satisfaction of teachers. Teacher satisfaction was found to be higher for teachers under transformational leaders in comparison to those under transactional and laissez-faire leaders. In addition, teacher satisfaction levels were higher for teachers under transactional leaders compared to laissez-faire leaders. Teachers' intention to stay was found to be higher for teachers under transformational leaders. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
