AbstractOn July 17-18, 2008, the National Education Association hosted the NEA National Summit on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) Issues in Education in Chicago, Illinois. The purpose of the Summit was to gather leading researchers, scholars, and practitioners on GLBT issues in education to assess the status of GLBT students in the United States educational system and to make recommendations on improving the learning conditions and academic achievement of GLBT youth. This report describes problems facing many GLBT students: missing school, underachieving, dropping out as a direct consequence of harassment suffered at school and homelessness because of their families' hostility toward them. The report also offers six tips to address bullying and harassment of students and discusses challenges faced by GLBT school employees. Appended to this report are Summit presenters and panels and a glossary of terms and labels. (Contains 135 endnotes. (This report was written with David Sheridan and Sabrina Holcomb.) (ERIC).
