AbstractThe quantitative relationship between factors previously identified as affecting the extent and intensity of training within organizations was explored through a survey of companies in Australia's entertainment and process manufacturing sectors. A self-completion questionnaire was mailed first to a sample of 446 companies across Australia (112 of which completed it) and then to an additional 299 companies. The survey responses were subjected to a log linear analysis. The analysis confirmed the important role of workplace change as a trigger or "driver" of training in both sectors. The effect of organizational change measured through changes to job roles and organizational situations was strongly related to all seven training activity variables studied. No relationship between worksite size and training volume was identified. A commitment to quality did not appear significantly associated with training activity, except with respect to formalization of training. Workforce permanence was significantly and positively related to the following indices of training activity: training diversity; reliance on external training; formalization of training; learning support; and individualization. Competition had only an indirect effect on training. The following items are appended: descriptions of the survey methodology, dependent variables, and independent variables; details of the log linear analysis; and the survey instrument. (Contains 45 tables and 96 references.) (MN)
