AbstractThis book (second edition) is an adaptation of Howard Gardener's theory on multiple intelligences (MI). The model in this book provides a language for talking about the inner gifts of so-called learning-disabled children. It describes how to bring Gardner's theory--a means of mapping the broad range of human abilities--into the classroom. The MI theory is described as a philosophy of education, an attitude toward learning, or a meta-model of education in the spirit of John Dewey's ideas on progressive education rather than a set program of fixed techniques and strategies. The MI are grouped into seven categories: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. Since the publication of the first edition in 1994, several new developments in MI theory have been developed and added to this second edition. Most important are Gardner's addition of an eighth intelligence (the naturalist, which is incorporated into the text) and the possibility of a ninth intelligence (the existential, which is discussed in a special chapter). Also included is an expanded resource guide. A basic reading list on MI, related books on MI teaching, and examples of MI lessons and programs appear in appendices. (Contains 101 references.) (WFA)
