AbstractThis publication contains six essays that offer a range of practical and theoretical perspectives on work-related curriculum. It is part of the study materials for the one-semester distance education unit, Curriculum and Competencies, in the Open Campus Program at Deakin University (Australia). An introduction proposes a course design and pedagogy for the unit. "A Curriculum Model for Education in the Workplace" (Michael Langenbach) offers a philosophical base, differentiates between education and training, and describes a model. "Valuing Cognitive Dispositions and Cognitive Structures in Vocational Curriculum Development" (John Stevenson) uses the concerns for the role of knowledge and the nature of thinking processes to examine policies and trends in vocational education."Competency-Based Curriculum Development" (Paula Steenholdt) addresses vocational curriculum development in the technical and further education system and outlines advantages and disadvantages of competency-based training. "Putting Ourselves into Practice: New Prospects for Program Planning and Evaluation" (Michael Collins) proposes an alternative approach with an orientation toward theory and practice. "If Competence Is the Answer, What Is the Question?" (Nancy S. Jackson) explores the paradoxes and contradictions of the competency movement in Great Britain and North America and points to implications for contemporary policy developments in Australia. "Working Knowledge: Intelligent Design of Workplace Education" (Richard C. Pipan) considers the nature of the work one does as a professional educator. (YLB)
