AbstractThis report presents the results of a study of the Nonformal Primary Education (NFPE) program, a relatively new educational delivery system developed and implemented by the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC). The NFPE program is a collaboration among a non-governmental organization (NGO), international donors, and some of the most disadvantaged communities in Bangladesh. The program has proven relatively successful in rapidly expanding access to primary education to those historically neglected by the formal primary education system: children, especially girls, from poor, rural, landless and near-landless families. The scope of work for this case study included three key areas: (1) What is BRAC's NFPE program? and What are its strengths and weaknesses? (2) What is the potential for rapidly expanding the NFPE program in Bangladesh? In particular, what might be the relationship between a large-scale NFPE program and the national system of primary education? and (3) What elements of BRAC's NFPE program might be relevant to other developing countries in their efforts to expand rapidly the primary education systems? This nonformal model might be useful to other less-developed countries seeking to expand their educational systems. The book contains 4 sections and more than 100 references. (EH)
