Abstract | This publication outlines the ways in which school districts are implementing school reform. Information in this resource directory is based on a survey of national affiliate districts and members of the National School Boards Association's (NSBA) Federal Relations Network. Section 1 discusses school reform, the role of school boards in improving American education, and general information gathered from the NSBA survey of school districts. Findings indicate that time, money, and teacher resistance are the primary obstacles to reform. The most frequently undertaken reform actions involve parent and community involvement, professional development, changing the school day and year, and changing the decision-making process. Section 2 provides brief descriptions of 543 ways in which school districts have implemented school reform. These tips are organized into 29 categories. Each tip includes a brief description of the reform, estimated costs, and a contact person and telephone number. Section 3 includes basic information on the school districts that participated in the survey. (LMI) |
