Abstract | This unit is designed to introduce students to the Islamic culture and civilization of the Middle Ages. The historical period which these materials cover begins with 711 (the date of Muslim entrance into Spain) and ends with 1492 (the date of the end of Muslim rule in Spain). The activities of the unit culminate with the recreation of a banquet set in the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. The unit includes historical background and materials on aspects of Islamic culture (art and architecture, clothing, food, music, games, and stories). A number of ideas for student projects are suggested throughout the unit, and several primary source documents are featured. An appendix includes a 711-1492 timeline; notes on Arabic transliteration and pronunciation, a guide to pronunciation, and a bibliography. A set of 25 slides of the Alhambra and a tape cassette of music from the world of Islam have been created to accompany this curriculum. (DB) |
