Abstract	The 1989 Georgia Survey of Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Use was conducted in 373 schools throughout Georgia. The stratified random sample was obtained from schools that participated in the 1987 survey (in which 93% of the school systems in Georgia participated) and were selected randomly from strata based on size of community and geographic location. The sample size for the 1989 survey was 161,153. This study also compared the findings of the 1989 survey to results of the survey conducted in 1987. Overall about one-fourth of the junior high and one-half the senior high students reported drinking beer and/or wine coolers within the past year. About 20% of the senior high students reported getting intoxicated when drinking beer and 8% reported getting intoxicated drinking wine coolers. About one-third of the senior high students reported using liquor. One in seven students in grades 9-12 admitted to smoking marijuana within the past year. Two-thirds of these students indicated that they get highly intoxicated when they smoke marijuana. Use of drugs and alcohol did not occur at school. The most popular places of drug and alcohol use were the student's home, a friend's home, and in other places in the community. For older students, a car was also a popular place to drink and smoke marijuana. This pattern of drug use suggests that drug prevention is a community-wide problem that must be addressed by parents, law enforcement, business and community leaders, churches, and others in the community as well as by schools.
