AbstractThis paper is concerned with the cultures of learning and the customs of learners. A distinction is drawn between the base learning culture of the learner as that which represents the knowledge, learning orientations, and strategies the learner brings to a learning situation, and a cultural learning posture that comprises the knowledge, learning orientations, and learning strategies of the educators. The base learning culture represents what the learner brings to the learning event. The cultural learning posture represents what the learning event brings to the learner. A wide variety of base learning cultures and cultural learning postures from around the world are examined in terms of knowledge content, learning orientations, and learning strategy. If effective learning is to take place by all, then those who bear responsibility for educating need to apprehend the cultural base of the learner and to present elements of the cultural learning posture that seek to share with the learner in a way that connects with postures previously encountered by the learner. A 63-item list of references is included. A paper by G. R. Teasdale "Interactions Between 'Traditional' and 'Western' Systems of Learning: The Australian Experience" also is included as an appendix.
