AbstractA study investigated the actual classroom use of American Sign Language (ASL) by 1,888 reading, mathematics, and social studies teachers of 4,500 hearing-impaired students. When asked directly, 140 teachers replied that they use ASL in the classroom. However, analysis of responses to a series of questions about specific communication behavior reduced this number to 25 teachers who may be using ASL and six who probably are. Questions addressed the use of signs in combination with speech; choice of fingerspelling, sign or gesture, or omission of specific words in a sentence; signing type; and use of lip movement. Results suggest that ASL is not as widely used in the classroom as is reported, and do not support the belief that awareness and use of ASL are increasing. It is also concluded that many teachers still do not know the difference between ASL and English. (MSE)
