| Abstract | Drury College (Missouri) has developed a commercial French course that is practical, situation-oriented, and provides instruction in correspondence and translation. The course is considered part of the cultural segment of the French program. It enrolls majors in business, French, and a variety of other disciplines, and emphasizes contextual listening comprehension and speaking, cultural readings and discussions, translation, and formal correspondence. Instructional activities include readings, short films, the writing of resumes for articles in current French newsmagazines, Monopoly played in French, idiomatic translation exercises, and letter-writing. Student evaluation is based on class participation, homework, three tests, and a final project consisting of a commercial and a series of letters synthesizing the cultural material covered with technical language skills. The course attracts and retains advanced language students and provides practical language skills in a liberal arts context. A six-page bibliography is included. (MSE) |
