AbstractThis document provides case studies, written by the people involved, of the following private sector/public school collaborations: (1) Honeywell; (2) Metropolitan Life Insurance and the American Educator; (3) Burger King Corporation; (4) Murray Bergtraum High School for Business Careers; (5) The Public Education Fund; (6) The Boston Compact; and (7) The Business Community and Education Reform in California and Minnesota. The following topics are addressed for each case: (1) civic context; (2) motivation for involvement; (3) process; (4) outcomes; and (5) lessons learned. Mini-cases of other business/education partnerships are also provided. The following themes are revealed: (1) the history and tradition of public/private partnership varies from city to city; (2) the economic context is an important factor in involvement; (3) although most collaborations have as a goal educational improvement, they do not all have the same objective; (4) many of the cases focus on efforts involving either students or teachers; (5) top management must be involved if the collaboration is to be effective; (6) the collaborations change over time; (7) companies prefer to do some things unilaterally and others in coalition; (8) both corporations and schools take collaboration very seriously; and (9) business realizes the need for broadly, liberally educated employees, and participatory management and leadership. Appendices present information on the impact of school/business partnerships in small urban and rural districts, and the Committee for Economic Development survey results. Also included are an annotated bibliography, information about the contributors, and an index. (BJV)
