AbstractResearch on comparative and international education cannot rely solely on the work of scholars. Before conclusions are reached, researchers may benefit from an examination of what journalists working in various countries have learned. While journalists may give less emphasis to education than to political, economic, social, or personality factors, many have written about educational activities in national, regional, and local contexts. A number of scholars have written and reported on their understandings of Soviet schools. In most cases, these scholars obtained their information from official reports, government personnel, or reviews of the writings of other researchers. These scholars are often handicapped by lack of time, their inability to insert themselves into the system, and a propensity to review only official documents. Journalists are rarely mentioned in scholarly works about comparative education and are not asked by scholars to share their knowledge. Because some journalists have resided in the Soviet Union for many years, they have been able to develop a realistic and accurate understanding of the Soviet educational system. They can observe, listen, compare, and analyze material over time, which results in useful insights and clarity that can be added to data. Educational comparatists and journalists should share their knowledge and view themselves as colleagues. (JHP)
