AbstractIndirect student costs at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington were studied: semester expenses for food, shelter, clothing, books and supplies, personal items, health care, transportation, and child care. Selected cost data were also compared to student characteristics including: whether they had ever received financial aid from the university, their enrollment status, whether they were claimed as a dependent on their parents' taxes, their physical handicap status, employment status, place of residency, and whether they were currently on a university meal plan. Out of a sample of 433 students polled, a total of 145 students responded and represented both full-time and part-time on-campus and off-campus students. Among full-time students, food costs averaged $100 per semester more for on-campus students than for off-campus students. Being a financial aid recipient had little to do with one's employment status. There was no significant link between being on financial aid and cost of living as measured by indirect expenses. Finally, there was no significant connection between having a job and cost of living. The questionnaire and response data are appended. (SW)
