AbstractThe workshop is the most convenient and frequent means of inservice education. The purposes and types of social studies inservice workshops are examined, guidelines for effective planning and implementation are provided, and helpful hints and areas of caution designed to assist in conducting successful workshops are suggested. Six typical formats of social studies workshops are noted: (1) curriculum development, revision, and improvement; (2) awareness and/or dissemination of social studies materials and strategies; (3) evaluation of curriculum or instructional impact; (4) evaluation of student progress; (5) implementation of specific materials or strategies; and (6) local sharing programs. Those planning successful inservice programs must consider participant needs, workshop content, specific goals, available resources, recruitment and public relations, necessary logistical tasks, evaluation format, and follow-up activities. Hints and cautions to be considered deal with participant involvement, demonstrations and peer teaching, "ice breaker" activities, administrative support, the inclusion of content as well as process, and appropriate evaluation procedures.
