| Abstract | This paper presents an analysis and review of recent research on the teacher's role, rewards and incentives for teachers, and the developmental stages through which teachers progress. Studies on the role of the teacher included investigations into the social and psychological perspectives on the role, and the social and structural features of role perception. Two perspectives of role are examined--the accepted role as understood and internalized by the individual, and the "sent role," or the expectations of others for the behaviors and attitudes of the individual living in that role. Studies on teaching as a career of choice have focused on the attractions to teaching, and the extrinsic and intrinsic rewards and incentives a teaching career offers. Examinations of teacher attrition have indicated different emphases on various satisfactions and dissatisfactions of teaching. The final section of the paper is devoted to a review of research on the developmental stages in teaching and a brief overview of studies on beginning teachers.
