AbstractPrepared for a 1984 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) conference, this report discusses the potential of the new information technologies for enhancing learning in school, vocational, and general education, and presents eight groups of case studies taken from member countries which illustrate what is currently being done to help individuals, organized groups, social and political organizations, and businesses and institutions to come to terms with these technologies. Organized along a continuum, the first group of cases includes one-time, small scale events, while the last group involves permanent, highly structured bodies. The cases summarized focus on the following areas: computer camps, plays, festivals and fairs; permanent museum centers and exhibitions; programs enhancing school industry relationship; LOGO programming language use with potential drop-outs, students with learning disabilities, and young children with Down's Syndrome; telematics, including viewdata and teletext; general education within the school system; computer literacy for general audiences through the British Broadcasting Corporation; and France's Centre Mondial Informatique and Italy's FORMEZ, an adult education agency. The challenge posed by the new information technologies to formal education is discussed in terms of curriculum, methods, delivery systems, teacher training, lifelong learning, equal education, and the new information society.
