| Abstract | The educational experiences and special needs of gifted girls at elementary and secondary levels are discussed. It is noted that enrollment of women in college science and mathematics courses remains disproportionately low. It is felt that girls in grades 7 and up are not encouraged to participate fully in math and science courses. Special sections of math and science courses offered for girls only, with a supportive female role model as teacher, are suggested as a more positive environment for growth that would attract gifted female students. Additional topics discussed include acceleration within subjects, skipping a grade, narrow academic specialization, identification of gifted students, and enrichment activities. (JW) |
