AbstractBoth museums and public libraries are available sources of education for adults. Besides their traditional functions of collecting and preserving items from human artistic or scientific history, museums have taken on a more active role in educating the public, particularly adults. Some educational services provided by museums are dioramas, period rooms, orientations, tours, participatory experiences, publications, and lectures and seminars. Some museums take their programs to the public through approaches such as a "museum without walls" or an acting out of cultural events. Because of the increasing role being played by museums in the education of adults, more professional museum staff are being trained in adult education programs. Libraries have long been a focus of self-directed, lifelong learning for adults. They provide reference services, reading material, video material, discussion groups, and specialized services for various publics. Libraries are becoming increasingly community oriented, taking their services out to those who need them. They are primary educational resources to adults in the community and provide the basic services to aid citizens to become knowledgeable voters and to guard their intellectual freedom. (KC)
