| Abstract | In addition to the usual problems of obtaining a representative sample, the family researcher is confronted with the problem of who speaks for the family. Traditionally women have been the informants in family research. To examine the coparental relationship between divorced spouses, data were collected from both former spouses (N=98 couples). The results supported the importance of using multiple informants in family research. However, conceptualizing the couple as the unit of quantitative analysis poses problems. Couple sum or mean scores may result in the loss of data and are most appropriate under the same conditions when responses from a sole respondent would suffice. For some analyses, separate reports of men's and women's responses are needed. Discrepancies in couples' responses provide useful information and may enhance an understanding of family dynamics.
