Abstract | More than 100 individual and group activities, learning center ideas, and bulletin board suggestions are offered in this handbook for developing the writing skills of second, third, and fourth grade students. An analysis chart is provided as a diagnostic tool for determining the writing strengths and weaknesses of students. The activities are organized according to the analysis chart and include ideas for mechanics, language and vocabulary development, sentence structure, paragraphing, and understanding of task (following directions, using proper format, knowing the audience). Appendixes contain a list of language and composition objectives for grades two through four, suggestions on how to be a good storywriter, a basic word list, task cards for writing, and suggested activities not easily cataloged according to the analysis chart.
