AbstractThe National Middle School Study was conducted to provide baseline data to guide development of a middle school teacher training program. This paper focuses on the responses of principals of exemplary middle schools to various functions and characteristics of the middle school. The principals were instructed to reflect actual, rather than the ideal, middle school operations and practices in their responses to a questionnaire of 57 Likert-scale items in the areas of students, teachers, principals, curriculum, and facilities and organizations. Among the substantive findings are that principals emphasized the learning of basic skills and the development of students' self-concept and believed teachers should support guidance and counseling services. Some items considered part of the middle school philosophy but not supported by principals were teacher involvement in staff selection, teacher training to better anticipate emerging adolescent needs, and mainstreaming.
