AbstractUsing an attitudinal questionnaire, the National Middle School Study surveyed 153 principals and 567 teachers in "exemplary" middle schools in 37 states. The questionnaire sought to learn the respondents' attitudes concerning the needs or functions of middle school students, teachers, principals, curricula, facilities, and organization. Middle schools selected for inclusion in the survey were those identified as successful by state education departments and other educational authorities. Among the survey's findings were that teachers judged principals by their helpfulness in promoting effective classroom teaching; principals encouraged teacher involvement in school decision-making; teachers and principals favored emphasizing basic skills in the curriculum; and both groups desired to enlarge middle school facilities to include shops, laboratories, and enrichment classrooms.
