| Abstract | The first paper in this collection of symposium papers presents the results of a survey of nearly 800 educational institutions and provides information on institutional characteristics, institutions engaged in teacher education evaluation, scope of data collected, methods of data collection, relationship between size of program and method of data collection, perceived value of teacher education evaluation, perceived needs in conducting teacher education evaluation, and reported budget for evaluation. In the second paper, a discussion is given on the broad spectrum of evaluation and "don'ts" for program evaluation. The third paper offers suggestions for planning, developing, implementing, and operating an evaluation program. Ten design characteristics which should be considered for developing an evaluation program are described in the fourth paper. The fifth paper presents ways to modify costs of program evaluation and suggestions for taking advantage of existing resources. The concluding paper addresses the future of teacher education evaluation. Brief summaries report on interactions in small discussion groups at the symposium at which these papers were presented.
