Abstract | This document is the result of a project commissioned by the Council of Europe to produce a system of units in foreign language instruction for adults. The "threshold level" is conceived as the compilation of knowledge and skills a person would need in order to communicate simply but effectively in a foreign environment. It is not limited to communication for survival but rather is aimed at enabling one to communicate with others on an interpersonal level, that is, to be able to share to some extent their interests and lifestyle. This document provides theoretical and practical information to persons involved in the administration and construction of programs and courses. A discussion of the considerations involved in defining the threshold level precedes an extensive listing of situations in which threshold proficiency is desirable, and of specific, topic-related notions and their common English referents or exponents. For example, various formulas with which English speakers express emotional attitudes are set forth. Appendices include a grammatical inventory and a discussion of methodological implications. (JB) |
