Abstract	Focusing on adult education in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), this book is part of the series on adult education in Europe. The first of three sections, The System of Adult Education in the GDR, describes (1) the historical background particularly since World War II and the development of the socialist state; (2) the social determinants (socio-economic, political, and intellectual and cultural); (3) the goals, components, and main modes; (4) the three spheres of content (systematic post-high-school general education in People's Universities, vocational further training, and multivariate further training by social organizations); (5) the legal foundations; (6) management, planning and financing; and (7) the basic forms of the adult pedagogical process. The second section, Personnel Engaged in Adult Education, points out that there are 6,000 full-time staff members employed in the GDR's adult education facilities, and describes their qualifications and social status. Section 3, Theory and Research in the Field of Adult Education, provides a summary of current research programs and lists the themes around which research efforts in the GDR are currently centered. The appendixes include an extract from the GDR labour code, adult education statistics for the GDR, statutory provisions on adult education in the GDR, and a list of selected publications on adult education in the GDR.
