Abstract	The paper refutes the long held belief that Down's syndrome is the result of maternal age and maternal etiology. The author cites new evidence which demonstrates that Trisomy-21 (the presence in the chromosome of an extra arcocentric chromosome resulting from non-disjunction), the major cause (95% of the cases) of Down's syndrome, can originate in the egg or the sperm. Maternal origin was indicated in 74% of the cases and paternal origin was indicated in the 26% of the cases reviewed in the paper. The author concludes with a study of 37 college texts dealing with exceptionality (published between 1970-1978) reviewed for etiological considerations of Down's syndrome. Among findings of the review was that of the 35 texts which mention Trisomy-21, 26 include information regarding maternal origin and maternal age dependency. (Author/PHR)
