Abstract | The central theme for this document is provided by the report by the National Advisory Committee on Mathematical Education (NACOME), which prepared an overview and analysis of U.S. school-level mathematical education. Topics covered include: (1) a research-supported discussion of several issues facing mathematics educators; (2) suggestions for kindergarten mathematics teacher education; (3) mathematics anxiety, individualization, and learning theory as they relate to mathematics teacher education; (4) specifications for the training of a teacher of general mathematics in junior and senior high schools; (5) a description of a graduate in-service workshop for elementary and secondary teachers; and (6) the secondary mathematics teacher education curriculum for the urban-bound teacher.
