AbstractThe Vocational Interest Career Examination (VOICE) is 400-item multiple choice inventory developed by the Air Force to improve the quality of vocational guidance and job placement. The VOICE is divided into four categories: job titles, work task, spare time activities, and desired learning experiences. Factor-referenced homogeneous subscales were constructed from the VOICE to simplify the scoring of individual profiles and summarize information for eighteen vocational areas. The subscales were utilized for 10,035 male and 12,710 female recruits who had completed the VOICE. Analyses of the correspondence between the subscales and their factor score equivalents were performed. Across all factors, information loss on the subscales was considered to be within acceptable limits. The validity of VOICE subscales was further examined by comparison with the Army Classification Inventory (ACI) and the Navy Vocational Interest Inventory (NVII); analysis revealed that the VOICE subscales replicated NVII and ACI scores more completely than those inventories replicated VOICE subscales. Appended tables also reveal that preferences associated with subscales varied for males and females. Male recruits scored higher in electronics, heavy construction, law enforcement, marksman, and mechanics, while females scored higher in office administration, food service, audiographics, agriculture, teacher/counseling, medical service, and aesthetics.
