Abstract | A detailed historical analysis of enrollment trends system-wide, by sector (public baccalaureates, community colleges, and independents), and by individual institutions in Michigan for the period 1964-1976 is provided. A special analysis of public baccalaureate institutions by statewide planning and development regions and by county for the five counties that provide the major share of known county enrollments is also presented. Major findings show: (1) systemwide fall headcount enrollments more than doubled in the period 1964-1976; (2) the percentage of the population attending college is increasing; (3) more students are attending part time; (4) more students are Michigan residents; (5) five counties provide the majority of enrollments; (6) some regions in the State may be saturated, others may not; (7) planning region I (southeastern Michigan) supplies a major and constant share of baccalaureate enrollments; and (8) other variables such as unemployment, 11-12 grade enrollments, and state population, may affect public baccalaureate enrollments. Data relating to these findings are provided in the appendix. (SPG) |
