Abstract | This article discusses the role of second language teachers in relation to the changing role of language departments at the university level. Of the many factors involved in setting up a successful language program, student participation and the role of the teacher are among the most important. The teacher's qualifications should reflect the changing requirements of the university language department, which are shaped by a number of factors, including: declining student enrollments; growing adult demand for language training; and growing demand for specialized language courses. These new demands should be viewed by the language teacher and the language department as a challenge that represents the key to survival and growth. (AM) |
