| Abstract | This paper conjectures about motivational, behavioral, and contextual factors in the transferability of vocational skills--factors which will influence performance when and if movement into or across jobs occurs. It is assumed that skill transfer depends upon similarity within and among motivational, contextual, and behavioral factors, referred to as domains. The basic points of view presented about each domain are (1) the motivational domain concerns interests, attitudes, goals, and reinforcers which guide the individual's actions, (2) the behavioral domain concerns the sequence and array of processes through which an individual arrives at measureable end performance having practical utility, and (3) the contextual domain concerns the performance requirements imposed by the environment as well as the organizational, information, and physical support provided. The structure and functioning of each domain is discussed in separate sections. A final section considers the implications for education of current knowledge about skill transfer. Characteristics of educational outcomes which would lend confidence in transferability of skills are defined. Educational implications of conjectures made in the paper are examined through a series of recommended steps for educational development: (1) Define and analyze criterion contexts; (2) develop educational tasks; (3) optimize educational sequences; and (4) optimize conditions of skill acquisition.
