Abstract | Presented are duplications of the responses given by Recreational Services for the Handicapped (Baltimore, Maryland) as part of a project to collect, share, and compile information about, and techniques in the operation of 18 community action models for recreation services to the disabled. Model programs are categorized as consumer, client competency, recreation and leisure services, parks and recreation, rehabilitation, and voluntary health agency models. Reported are program services in the following areas: population served (handicapped children and adults); primary activities (sports, tumbling, arts and crafts, music, cooking, socializing, camping, swimming, and hiking); primary facilities used (two-room building surrounded by spacious playing fields and a camp); staffing (supervisor, senior center director, full-time recreation leader, three part-time recreation leaders, seven part-time recreation workers, one chauffeur, one arts and crafts specialist, and one music specialist); total budget ($ll5,000 for ongoing program and $97,000 for summer camping program) and primary sources of support (general city funds); and values and goals achieved through the program to provide a (recreational and social outlet for handicapped children and adults with incidental learning experiences.
