| Abstract | This book contains nine critical essays on television as a cultural force. Television as dream and television as cultural document are the subjects of two essays. The popularity of "All in the Family" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" is assessed in terms of the moral messages and cultural factors in the shows which have a broad appeal to American audiences. Television melodrama and morality dramas are examined in terms of the truthfulness and fallibility of the characters. The last essay provides some thoughts on television criticism, and the book concludes with a 60-item, annotated bibliography with entries dating from 1952 to 1976. (CH) |
