Abstract	In recent years, the cable television industry has been marked by prolific growth both in the number of stations and in the number of subscribers, and its legitimacy has been affirmed by a Supreme Court decision which placed the industry under the control of the Federal Communications Commission, (FCC) but the full potential of cable television has not been attained or even fully discussed. A conference sponsored by the Aspen Program on Communications and Society addressed the role cable television could play in humanistic education. Topics of discussion were: (1) present humanistic uses of television, (2) the arts and humanities on television, (3) cultural and documentary programs, (4) television teaching inside the classroom, (5) television teaching outside the classroom, (6) television-based educational services, and (7) the limits of public television. Also discussed were the relations between the cable television industry with the FCC, with local broadcasters, and with educators. (EMH)
