Abstract	Computer-managed introductory biology programs at Ohio State University and South Dakota State University were designed to implement a generalized computer-managed instructional model. The programs are based upon an individualized instructional philosophy and allow students to select areas of interest, progress at their own rate, and receive credit whenever they complete the course. The Coursewriter III, Version 2 language for System/370 is used. User modifications greatly expand the flexibility of the language and allow uncompromised realization of the management model. Course materials are presented on-line or prescribed for off-line use. The programs specify learning outcomes, diagnose the learner's initial state, accommodate a variety of learning strategies, and simplify correlation and documentation of data. They also permit instructors to collect, store, and retrieve information for the systematic improvement of instruction. Lastly, efforts have been made to insure the model's adaptability to any content area at any level. (Author)
