AbstractThe focus of the program described in this paper was to help junior college counselors and other staff be more effective in working with educationally disadvantaged women students. A second purpose was to train junior college staff in the use of group counseling as a technique which could reach more students than present methods. The program for the "Training in Group Counseling of Minority and Low-Income Women Students in Junior College" was offered in the winter and spring of 1971 to 60 participants by UCLA Extension. Objectives included: (1) providing information on the life expectations and opportunities of low-income women; (2) encouraging insight and awareness in counselors of needs and aspirations of disadvantaged women students; (3) to increase counselor skill in group methods; (4) to help set up and supervise actual group counseling situations at the participants' colleges; and (5) to encourage the use of para-professionals in counseling work. Participants and staff agreed that the program was effective in providing new information and changing the attitudes of participants toward educationally disadvantaged minority women. Detailed descriptions of the planning, staff, curriculum, instructional techniques, and evaluation of this program are included. (LP)
