AbstractPrograms for computer-assisted instruction (CAI) which were developed at Stanford University from 1963-70 are described, and prospects for CAI in the 1970's are considered briefly. The programs include ones in arithmetic, logic, and reading for elementary grades and in basic Russian and remedial algebra for college students. Of these, the logic course is most fully described here. Advances in CAI in the coming decade will depend on research on the dialogue and interaction between computer and student, as well as on building an adequate psychological model of the student. By 1980, about 15% of students in the United States on all grade levels will be in daily contact with a computer for some aspect of their instruction, especially in elementary reading and mathematics. Starting in the 1970's and expanding thereafter, computer terminals in homes will provide education for adults in basic skills, vocational training, and advanced courses. (JK)
