Abstract | This keynote will be based on the objectives of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD) 2005-14, i.e. its vision of education for sustainable development as “a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from quality education and learns the values, behaviour and lifestyles required for sustainable future and for positive societal transformation” (http.//portal.unesco/org.education/). Nearly all “action themes” of UNDESD as environment, water, rural development, sustainable consumption, sustainable tourism, intercultural understanding, cultural diversity, climate change, disaster reduction, biodiversity, market economy etc. have a geographical dimension. Therefore it is necessary that the paradigm of sustainable development will be integrated into the teaching of geography at all levels and in all regions of the world in the right manner. That is the reason why at first the eco-system “human-earth” and the paradigm of sustainable development will be explained. The sustainable development of the earth consists of the sustainable development of nature, economy and society as well. Having defined what sustainable development means the main strategies will be listed which have to be implemented to realize sustainable development. On that basis it will become possible to present educational principles and methods which should be used and competencies which should be approached in geography education because they are needed to implement sustainable development at regional, national, international and global level.
