AbstractIn the first article Pia-Maria Rabensteiner develops pedagogical ideas for a more child-centred education in schools. Her point is to feed the minds of pupils in the search for understanding more actively. Aage Jensen's article deals with our relation to time. Time is something we have no shared conception of. However the personal experience of time is important for individual life. Personal relations to time vary, like Aage Jensen argues. In the next article Geoff Cooper discusses the educational issues related to nature. It is an important goal in education to enhance the development of students' personal relationships to nature. Without this kind of relations to nature it is difficult to make changes in life styles necessary for life in the future. In his paper, Helmut Zwander describes excursions as a pedagogical method in intercultural learning. He argues that only excursions create optimal preconditions for an experimental, lively and motivating instruction in all subjects. Cultural education is very much dealt with in Franz Comploi's article on listening to music. The question of musical content is surprisingly important. What is considered as proper of suitable varies. Hearing and listening are crucial for the development of perception and aesthetic knowledge. Andris and Ilze Kangro move our attention to teachers and teacher education. The article deals with Latvia and the recent developments in Latvian teacher education as part of the European Community. Marita Mäkinen writes about Finnish education, particularly about the question of literacy in the Finnish curriculum. Finland has scored among the best in PISA studies in reading. Mäkinen's article is an inside story about why the results have been good. In the last article Jane Bell and her colleagues introduce the concept of transformative pedagogy and discuss the concept in the context of professional education. The article deals with medical educators, but the contributions are important for all European educators. [...] The articles are published both in English and the authors' mother tongue to enlarge the readership and to ensure that also the nationally relevant and interesting issues have a place in this volume.
