AbstractWhether it be stepping onto the sidewalk or competing in team sports, the ability to maintain postural balance is an integral part of almost every movement task a person may perform. Postural control consists of a relationship between the position of one's centre of body mass (CBM) relative to the base of support and is controlled with the help of information provided by the somatosensory system, visual system and vestibular system. In people with disabilities, one or more of the systems providing information can be disrupted, resulting in the delivery of inadequate or conflicting information. This, combined with physical restraints that limit the ability to apply corrective forces, decreases balance ability and acts as a limiting factor in regard to what specific movement skills an individual may be able to perform. Various studies have been conducted examining postural control in people with various disabilities in comparison to "typically developing" peers. However, few studies have examined the trainability of balance in people with disabilities. Furthermore, these few existing studies deliver conflicting results. In addition, none were found that included an intervention program. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the improvement of dynamic balance in students with various disabilities within a physical education setting following a balance specific training program.
