AbstractInvestigated the influence of situational and individual factors in students' interest experience among 261 7th-graders from 9 different classes in 2 German schools from the upper academic track (Gymnasium). Student interest was assessed in 3 different subjects, and the variation in individual student interest level from lesson to lesson within a subject domain was measured. The possibility of predicting interest experience as a product of stable individual characteristics and situational aspects specific to each lesson was discussed. After a survey of students' individual interests and other individual characteristics, students were observed over a 3-week period and their interest experience as well as perceived autonomy support and control during instruction immediately after lessons was assessed. Situational factors were also assessed repeatedly. In conclusion, hierarchical linear modeling showed 36% to 45% of interest experience variance to be located at the within-student level. Perceived autonomy support and control during lessons, as well as individual interest, predicted students' interest experience in the classroom. (ZPID).
