| Abstract | In academic literature methods of and approaches to foreign language teaching are always associated with certain systematic conceptions of teachers but less so with systematic conceptions of the learner ("Lernerbilder"). The paper takes up the issue of learner conceptions by developing a definition of this concept and by supplying a chronological overview of modern foreign language teaching methods and approaches that have been used in an institutionalized context in Germany from 1850 to the present. These methods are presented, their aims illustrated and their supposed learner conceptions described. The description of the foreign language teaching methods and approaches need to take into account their respective historical, sociocultural and educational context since the methods and approaches and the context they are used in are interrelated.
