| Abstract | The emerge of a range of new media forms in the last 20 to 30 years has become a controversial topic in current debates about the modern world of the media. There are a number of areas in which the effect of the new, mostly digital, media is considered to be so profound that they have changed social and economic conditions. In particular, social networking websites provide an imagined community of participants who are not restrained by time and place. In this context the rise of locally based websites of villages and communities in Britain is a good example. The focus of these websites is not only geographically local, but they also offer the opportunity to communicate within the local community itself. Within this framework it is important to point out that these websites represent images that show what might be typically, e.g. English, rural or maybe weird. When dealing with these village websites in detail the German pupil is confronted with images of, e.g., buildings, fields, local animals, rural roads or the churches of the community or region, thereby getting an insight into 'rural Britain'.
