(Autorenreferat). "Both news media and the music press criticized Bono, singer of the rock band U2, for his political activities outside the music business. This raised numerous questions; is 'political pop' possible at all? What political visions may it convey? What is its impact? What we have at stake here are not only 'links' between popular music and politics, but complex relations with those and the media world as well. For, on the one hand the decision whether to take an artist's involvement in politics seriously is mode by the media, not by the artist's fans. On the other hand political pop music is addressed to citizens, not to fans or consumers. Therefore, in the 'triangle' of pop music, journalism and politics we need to analyse not only the explicit statements (like lyrics, reports and interviews), but all relevant contexts in which these statements are embedded. Focusing on the case of Campino participating in the concerts organized 2007 on the occasion of the G8 summit in Heiligendamm, the author analysis these contexts." (author's abstract). |
