It is not a novel idea that people with dementia and their relatives can be persuaded to dance. New is that it is happening in a dancing school. The dancing project described in this article represents normality and social participation for people with dementia. 70-80 percent of dementia patients are being looked after by their families, there are hardly any services for them outside of institutional accommodation. This may lead to social isolation and loneliness, not only on the part of those suffering from this condition but also of the relatives who care for them. The main objective of the dance project described below is to contribute to making life with and dementia worth living for a moment in time. Dancing ties in with biographical events and often plays a role in the process of active memory work. |
