Abstract | Part I of the book [provides] what we already know about the tension between the controlling goals and the educational goals in schools. The tendency of teachers, where controlling goals overwhelm the educational purposes, to accommodate to controls by teaching an artificial "school knowledge" in order to gain compliance from their students is reviewed. Part II of the book ... documents substantive, engaging, authentic teaching and learning in schools that were, from their origins, designed to be structured to support teaching and curriculum rich in substance and credible beyond the walls of the school. These are magnet schools, established to foster desegregation in a racially mixed urban district with a history of discriminatory educational practices. ... Part III [of the book] moves from the classroom to the origins and effects of legislated learning. The centralized reforms that imposed standardized test-driven curriculum on these and other schools in their state have their origin in the political and business arena, and not in the communities nor among the educational professionals in the schools.
