In his thoroughly referenced article European Dissertation Reform: The Reform of the Century? the author analyzed another aspect of the Bologna reform: The role of and conflict over the doctoral dissertation as the last phase of study (3rd cycle) or the first phase as an independent young scientist. He points to the different consequences of the various promotion models for living and working conditions. The author specifies the English (research student) and the German (Nachwuchsforscher) approaches as the two poles of the present continuum of promotion models, and makes a plea for the retention of variety, but tested against the criterion of success. The Bologna 5th Ministerial Conference held in London in May 2007 has now reached the same decision. (HoF/text adopted). |
