Abstract	In December 2006 the YIMC, as the oldest Polish-German non-school education centre, a joint project by the Action Reconciliation Service For Peace from Berlin and the City of Auschwitz, will celebrate its 20th anniversary. This is a perfect time to look back, define a unique place in history education in places of memory. It is also an opportunity to evaluate the educational concept as implemented as well as to define the tasks for the coming decade. The present work is a form of sketch presenting the activity of the Centre operating in the neighbourhood of the former KL Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp as well as an attempt to provide an answer to the following question: how does the program carried out by the YIMC relate to the mission defined by its authors and how does it respond to the challenges of today and the expectations of the young people.
